Corrida de Toros
A few Sundays ago I went to the Corrida de Toros (bullfight). Some people love it, and some people hate it. I enjoyed it. If I lived in Madrid, I'd be that girl with season tickets. I thought it was a beautiful art. The movements of the torreos are simply amazing. Everything from their dance-like motions to their costumes is art. Besides, torreos are handsome...for the most part. There are three parts to each round, and there are six rounds in total.
And yes, they do kill the bull. However, it's not all that gory. They stab it in the neck and there really isn't much blood involved.
I went to the fight with my friend Amy, from Baylor, and we sat behind this older Spanish couple who were experts! At first they seemed a bit standoffish towards us, because we were speaking English, but when they realized we spoke Spanish, we were BFFs! It started to rain, and we shared my umbrella, and after the rain the woman fed us. Yum! Jamon serrano y lomo con queso de cabra (serrano ham, smoked lamb, and goat cheese). One thing I've learned is that you don't say "No" to older Spanish women.
All in all it was a great experience. The demographics of the people who go are typically old men and tourists. The regulars are VERY passionate about it, and watching them yell insults if the matador does something they don't like is hilarious.
My host mom has never been to a bullfight, actually. She said she's never been interested. And Jesus and Vanessa have never been to one either. They say it's just not interesting to them. I've talked to quite a few Spaniards of the younger generation who aren't into it at all either. Many of them have been to the venue -Plaza de Toros- but for music concerts. They host other events there as well.
I found it interesting how we ride bulls in The States and how they fight bulls in Spain. I have a great respect for both. You wouldn't catch me doing either!
-Hasta luego,
Asha!
